Review; 7 paddlers were up for it on a cold clear morning. Jack had liberally sprinkle his magic dust around during the night only to see the winter sun climb into blue heavens and destroy  most of his work by the time we set off! For us it gave perfect conditions...a classic winter's afternoon paddle.

Review; 7 paddlers took to the water in dull but dry conditions but with a strongish and gusty south wind making the trip upriver a little hard but the return was easy and quick. The novices in the group adapted very well to the conditions and had a new confidence in their boat handling after just a few hours on the water! One of the joys of canoeing is often meeting the unexpected. On rounding a bend in the river we were greeted by a group of young men in various stages of undress and greased bodies. They ambitiously  planned to swim downriver for some distance. After sufficient motivation one of the group took the plunge, the others had no choice but to follow. Soon the screams and shouts abated and we concluded that either hypothermia had taken them or they were making progress down river!A very sociable and enjoyable afternoon out.

WE NOW START THE "WEEKEND BREAK" SEASON.

These short breaks are set in a variety of interesting and scenic locations.  They provide the opportunities to explore and visit the areas, paddle, learn new canoe skills, enjoy the company of others in a relaxed and natural environment and enjoy a weekend away, feeling refreshed and invigorated for the coming week!

Generally, these breaks follow a similar pattern.

1)      Meet on Friday evening at the venue/location. We like to camp: it’s fun and very sociable!  For those people without camping gear we have some equipment that can be hired for a small cost if you would like to try this option for the first time!

2)      We are very happy to provide information and  guidance for each of our weekend breaks.  We would welcome collaborative arrangements being made between us and other customers regarding travel, meals, and

accommodation.  It is, therefore, desirable that you speak with us personally to ensure that the "off the water's activities" are effective and enjoyable.

3)      We have a longish day on the water on Saturday, maybe around five hours and expect to cover around 10 miles (depending on weather conditions).  The journey will take in several stops including a relaxing lunch break! In the evenings we either have a barbecue or go to a pub!

4)      We will spend a shorter time on the water on Sunday.  This gives everyone the opportunity to pack up and leave for home in the late afternoon or early evening.

5)      All our trips are guided and include tuition and coaching.  However each location is different and so gives the opportunity to learn different canoe skills and techniques and then to apply them in that specific environment.  For example, coastal trips give good opportunities to develop strong and coordinated forward paddling, basic stern steering and learning how to trim the boat in wind and waves.  On the other hand, on moving water a different set of skills will be learnt and practised.  For example, back paddling, turning the boat quickly using bow and stern strokes, moving the canoe sideways and paddling across a flow of moving water (ferry gliding).

6)      The trips are roughly graded according to the level of difficulty expected.  The grading takes account of the level of personal fitness and canoeing experience required.  We use the colour coding commonly found and used in skiing!

 easy  medium  difficult  very difficult

Green = easy, blue = medium, red = hard and black = very difficult
